Japan provides Grant Aid of One Hundred and Fifty-Two Million Japanese Yen, to the Maldives for the Project for Human Resource Development Scholarship
Malé, July 15, 2026 – The Exchange of Notes for the Project for Human Resource Development Scholarship (JDS) was signed today by Her Excellency Mrs. ISHIGAMI Rumiko, Ambassador of Japan to the Maldives, and Her Excellency Sheryna Abdul Samad, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, at a ceremony held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The total amount of the grant aid for the Japanese Fiscal Year 2026 is one hundred and fifty-two million Japanese yen (JPY 152,000,000), which is equivalent to approximately USD 1 million.
The JDS project offers Maldivians fully funded scholarships to pursue master’s degrees in the social sciences at leading universities in Japan. The project commenced in the Maldives in 2020, and this grant will support five students pursuing master’s degrees in Japan. A total of 32 students has been selected for JDS so far, and 17 have returned to the Maldives after completing their master’s degrees in Japan.
