Government of Japan Donates Patrol Vessel Equipment to Maldives Customs Service
Malé, June 22, 2026 – The Government of Japan has donated patrol vessel equipment valued at approximately 85,000 USD (Japanese Yen ¥ 12,950,000), procured under Japan’s Economic and Social Development Programme (ESDP), for which the exchange of notes was signed on March 24, 2024. The equipment is expected to implement agile law enforcement at sea and strengthen the capacity and cooperation of law enforcement agencies to combat the expansion of illegal trade.
At the ceremony, the equipment was handed over by Her Excellency Mrs. ISHIGAMI Rumiko, Ambassador of Japan to the Maldives, and received by Commissioner General Ms. Fathimath Dhiyana, Maldives Customs Service.

The equipment includes:
- GPS navigation equipment – 2 units
- Marine radar – 2 units
- Sounding machine – 2 units
- International VHF Radiotelephone – 2 units
- Two-way wireless telephone device with spare parts – 3 units
The equipment, manufactured by leading Japanese companies including FURUNO ELECTRIC CO., LTD. and ICOM INC., will enhance navigation safety, maritime surveillance, and communication capabilities of Customs patrol vessels.
Her Excellency Mrs. ISHIGAMI noted in her remarks that the equipment reflects the quality, durability, and long-term reliability of Japanese technology, which is trusted by coast guards, customs authorities, and maritime operators around the world. She expressed her hope that the equipment would contribute to safer navigation, stronger maritime surveillance, and more effective maritime operations by the Maldives Customs Service.
This assistance follows Japan’s handover of the patrol vessel TATEYAMA to the Maldives Customs Service in November 2025. Together, the vessel and equipment are expected to further strengthen Customs’ maritime operational capabilities and contribute to the safety and security of the Maldives.
