【Application Open】MEXT scholarship for 2027 -Research Student (MA, PhD) and College of Technology (KOSEN) Student and Specialized Training College Student.

The Japanese Government, through the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (MEXT), offers scholarships to Maldivian students who wish to study in Japan.
Applicants can get the application guidelines and application form via the links below. Kindly submit the required number of hardcopies of the completed form with the required documents to the Embassy.
 
1. Scholarships
●2027 MEXT Scholarship Research Student (MA, PhD) Due date: 30th June 2026, at 17:00hrs
●2027 MEXT Scholarship College of Technology (KOSEN) Student Due date: 17th May 2026, at 17:00hrs
●2027 MEXT Scholarship Specialized Training College Student Due date: 17th May 2026, at 17:00hrs 

2. Application Timeline:

April 22nd, 2026 Application opens for Research Students
June 30th, 2026 Application submission deadline
Second week of July Initial screening results announced - Only candidates who pass the screening will be invited for an interview and written exam
Second week of July Shortlisted candidates take written exams and attend interviews at the Japanese Embassy
End of July 2026 Notification of results for the first screening
*Applicants who pass the screening receive additional instructions for next steps
September 1st, 2026 Deadline for applicants to request a provisional acceptance to Japanese universities
November 2026 The secondary (MEXT) screening and university placement
January 2027 Notification of results for the secondary (MEXT) screening and university placement
February - March 2027
(August - September)
Travel arrangements to Japan are made for scholarship recipient
April 2027
(September - October)
Departure for Japan and start of scholarship period


College of Technology (KOSEN) Student and Specialized Training College Student

May 17th, 2026 Application submission deadline
Early June, 2026 Initial screening results announced - Only candidates who pass the screening will be invited for an interview and written exam
Early June, 2026 Shortlisted candidates take written exams and attend interviews at the Japanese Embassy
Early June, 2026 Notification of results for the first screening
Documents of the shortlisted applicants will be sent to MEXT in Tokyo for the secondary screening.
November 2026 The secondary (MEXT) screening and university placement
December 2026 Notification of results for the secondary screening
February - March 2027
(August - September)
Travel arrangements to Japan are made for scholarship recipient
April 2027
(September - October)
Departure for Japan and beginning of scholarship period

 

3. Knowledge of Japanese Language
All applicants are required to take a Japanese language exam as part of the First Screening. Prior study of the Japanese language will be an added advantage. All applicants must have the Japanese language ability to adapt to living in Japan and, if selected, must be willing to deepen their understanding of Japanese language and culture after arrival.
 
4. How to Apply
 All required documents for MEXT Scholarship should be submitted in physical form to:

Important Notes
• Please submit your documents to the Consular Section Counter.

Opening hours:
Sunday - Thursday  
9:00 - 12:00, 13:45 - 17:00

Closed on Fridays, Saturdays and Embassy holidays
The Consular Section closes at 16:15, but documents will be accepted until 17:00hrs.

 

• Document Submission: Please note that submitted documents will not be returned. Applicants must submit attested true copies of original documents.
 
• Selection Process: Only candidates who pass the initial screening will be contacted regarding the next steps. Kindly understand that we are unable to provide individual feedback or reasons for the selection results.
