Malé, April 1, 2026 –“National Forum on Sustainable Elderly Care and Long-Term Care Systems” was held at Maldives National University (MNU) on 31 March–1 April 2026, organized by the committee consisting of the Ministry of Health, Maldives Bureau of Statistics, Embassy of Japan (EoJ), the Asian Development Bank (ADB), and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), co-financed by EoJ, ADB and UNFPA, with support by MNU.
As the Maldives undergoes a rapid demographic transition, the forum provided a platform for policy dialogue and knowledge sharing on strengthening sustainable elderly care systems. Discussions focused on addressing emerging challenges associated with population aging, including long-term care needs, dementia, and community-based care services.
Experts and private sector representatives from Japan contributed actively to the forum, sharing insights on Japan’s experience in elderly care, including healthcare systems, public-private collaboration, and innovative approaches. In addition, Nihon Kohden presented its advanced medical technologies, highlighting the role of Japanese innovation in supporting healthcare in the Maldives.
The forum also introduced Japan’s ongoing cooperation with the Maldives, including support through the Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects (GGP), aimed at enhancing access to medical services for vulnerable populations.
The Government of Japan remains committed to working closely with the Maldives and international partners to support the development of sustainable and inclusive elderly care systems.
