Grant Contract Signed for the Provision of an Elderly Support Transportation Vehicle in Malé City
Malé, March 4, 2026 – The Grant Contract for “The Project for the Provision of Elderly Support Transportation Vehicle in Malé City” under Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects (GGP) was signed between Her Excellency Mrs. ISHIGAMI Rumiko, Ambassador of Japan to the Maldives, and Mr. Ahmed Shabin, Secretary General of Maldivian Red Crescent (MRC).
Under this project, the Government of Japan will provide a grant of USD 65,784 for the procurement of a specially equipped vehicle to support the transportation of elderly persons, including those with mobility difficulties, in Malé City.
As the elderly population in the Maldives continues to increase, ensuring access to medical services has become an important priority. Many senior citizens face challenges in travelling to hospitals and clinics due to limited transportation options. The provision of this vehicle is expected to improve access to healthcare for vulnerable elderly persons and to reduce the burden on emergency transport services.
The GGP is part of the Japanese Official Development Assistance (ODA) implemented by the Embassy of Japan in Maldives to empower people at the grassroots level. Since 1996, the GGP has been implemented in broad areas such as education, environment, health, transportation, and energy to contribute to sustainable development of the Maldives.
