The Government of Japan provides sea ambulance under the Economic and Social Development Program to the Maldives Coast Guard

Malé, February 2, 2026 – The Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of Maldives, Her Excellency Mrs. ISHIGAMI Rumiko, officially handed over one (1) sea ambulance to the Ministry of Defense today. This generous assistance was provided under the Economic and Social Development Programme of the Government of Japan’s grant aid scheme and was received by the Minister of Defense, His Excellency Mohamed Ghassaan Maumoon.

The Exchange of Notes was signed in October 2021 with a total budget of four hundred million Japanese Yen (¥400,000,000) (approximately USD 3.6 million and is equivalent to Maldivian Rufiyaa 55.5 million). The sea ambulance provided today is a well-equipped 19-meter-long vessel with a cruising speed of 40.5KT, specially designed for maneuverability in rough weather conditions and well equipped with life support apparatuses such as oxygen flow meter, aspirator, ECG monitor, automatic CPR etc. and paramedics can administer semi-treatments in the vessel.

The Government of Japan hopes that this vessel will significantly strengthen the capacity and capabilities of the Maldives Coast Guard in effectively carrying out its duties across the country, thereby contributing to the overall safety and prosperity of the Maldivian people.
