Japan provides Grant Aid of one hundred and fifty-five billion Japanese Yen (1,550,000,000), to the Maldives for the Project for Disaster Resilience Enhancement in the Male’ Island
Malé, July 26, 2025 – The Exchange of Note for the Project for Disaster Resilience Enhancement in the Male’ Island was signed by Her Excellency Ms. IKUINA Akiko, Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, and His Excellency Abdulla Khaleel, Minister of Foreign Affairs at a ceremony held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs today. Parliamentary Vice Minister Ms. IKUINA is visiting the Maldives as the Special Envoy of His Excellency Prime Minister Mr. ISHIBA Shigeru on the occasion of the 60th Anniversary of Independence of the Maldives.
This project is a follow up of the historical initiatives for “Project for the Seawall Construction in Male” Island, which was carried out from 1987 to 2006 and shielded the residents of Male Island from the devastating 2004 tsunami in the Indian Ocean. By restoring and modernizing the seawalls on Male’ Island’s east and north coasts, this follow-up project will provide significant support for disaster management & coastal protection in Male’ Island. Additionally, the Japanese government will supply the Maldivian government with specialized equipment for efficient stormwater drainage on Male’ Island as part of this project. This project is expected to be finished by 2027 and will be implemented by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), in close partnership with the Ministry of Construction and Infrastructure.
The Government of Japan gives high importance to environment, climate change measures, and disaster prevention under the development cooperation policy for the Maldives.
The Government of Japan remains committed to further strengthening the socio-economic development in the Maldives.
