Her Excellency Ms. IKUINA Akiko, Special Envoy of the Prime Minister of Japan, His Excellency Mr. ISHIBA Shigeru, and Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs, will undertake an official visit to Malé, Republic of Maldives, from 25 to 27 July 2025. Her Excellency will be accompanied by senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan

During the visit, H.E. Ms. Ikuina is scheduled to:

Pay courtesy calls on His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, President of the Republic of Maldives, and His Excellency Dr. Abdulla Khaleel, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Maldives,
Attend official events commemorating the 60^th anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Maldives,
Sign the Exchange of Notes between the Government of Japan and the Government of the Republic of Maldives for “the Project for Disaster Resilience Enhancement in Malé Island” implemented by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and deliver a statement on the occasion,
Interact with some members of the Japanese community residing in the Maldives, and
Visit the Tetrapod Monument, a symbol of the enduring friendship between the two nations.

H.E.Ms. Ikuina’s visit to the Republic of Maldives reaffirms the warm and longstanding friendship between Japan and the Maldives and is expected to further strengthen bilateral cooperation and exchanges and to promote a “Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP)” based on the rule of law, as both countries look ahead to commemorating the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations in 2027.
