The Government of Japan hands over equipment provided under a project with a total budget of USD 5.4 million to strengthen waste management in the Maldives.
Malé, July 20, 2025 – Ambassador of Japan to the Maldives Her Excellency ISHIGAMI Rumiko handed over equipment to strengthen waste management in the Maldives to Minister of Tourism and Environment His Excellency Thoriq Ibrahim, at a ceremony held today. The equipment handed over includes three (3) glass crushers, one (1) wheel loader, and three (3) compactor trucks.
The equipment was provided in line with the Exchange of Notes signed between the Government of Japan and the Government of the Republic of Maldives on 20th December 2022 under the Economic and Social Development Programme, in value of seven hundred million Japanese Yen (¥ 700,000,000) (approximately USD 5.4 million). The equipment handed over will be utilised to enhance waste management operations at regional waste management facilities and support the transportation of waste for final treatment and will help pave the way for a national, integrated, and climate-responsive waste management system in the Maldives.
The Government of Japan remains committed to supporting the Maldives in its efforts to protect the environment and achieve long-term prosperity for its people and hopes this project will further enhance the ever lasting bilateral relations between Japan and the Maldives.
