Government of Japan has decided to confer “The Order of the Sacred Treasure, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon” upon former professor at Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, Dr. YAJIMA Hikoichi.

On April 29, 2025, the Government of Japan announced the recipients of the 2025 Spring Conferment of Decoration.
The Government of Japan has decided to confer “The Order of the Sacred Treasure, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon” on Dr. YAJIMA HIkoichi, former Professor at Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to his promotion of academic exchange through the history of Islam.
Professor YAJIMA worked with Maldivian researchers to translate several Maldivian historical documents from Arabic to English. Also, he spent 20 years translating “Rihla”, or the travelogue written by 13th century explorer Ibn Battuta, into Japanese. The work which covers history and culture of the region from Africa, Middle East, and Asia, including the accounts of the Maldives around 1343, contributed to epoch-making leap in sharing Maldives' history and culture with Japan and the World.
The conferment ceremony will be held in Tokyo in May, 2025.
