              N. Holhudhoo, December 5, 2024 Her Excellency Mrs. Takeuchi Midori, Ambassador of Japan to Maldives officially handed over an incinerator to Mr. Rilwan Mohamed, President of the Holhudhoo Council under the Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Project at a ceremony held on Holhudhoo Island, Noonu Atoll.

This assistance follows the Grant Contract signed between the Embassy of Japan in Maldives and the Holhudhoo Council on January 6, 2020. Under the contract, a grant of Three Hundred One Thousand Seven Hundred Fifty-Five US dollars (USD 301,755) was committed for the procurement of the incinerator, developed by Thomas Technical Institute Co., Ltd, in Okinawa, Japan.

Through this project, Holhudhoo Island will be equipped with a smoke-free incinerator capable of burning a wide range of waste – plastic, kitchen waste, medical waste, green waste, used oil, tires, and nappies – at a reasonable operational cost. This assistance will complement the ongoing efforts of the Holhudhoo Council to enhance waste management practices on the island, contributing to a sustainable future for the island’s development.

The GGP is part of the Japanese Official Development Assistance (ODA) implemented by the Embassy of Japan in Maldives to empower people at the grassroots level. Since 1996, the GGP has been implemented in broad areas such as education, environment, health, transportation, and energy to contribute to the sustainable development of the Maldives.
