Japan provides Grant Aid of twenty million Japanese Yen (20,000,000) to the Maldives to start first Design phase of the Project for Disaster Resilience Enhancement in the Malé Island

   
Malé, September 17, 2024 – The Exchange of Note for the Design Phase of the Project for Disaster Resilience Enhancement in the Male’ Island was signed by Her Excellency Mrs. Takeuchi Midori, Ambassador of Japan to the Maldives, and His Excellency Mr. Moosa Zameer, Minister of Foreign Affairs at a ceremony held in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs today.
 
This is a follow-up project to the historical grant aid Seawall Construction project in Malé implemented from 1988 to 2006, which protected the citizens in Malé Island from the disastrous Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004 and symbolise the long-standing partnership and credibility between the two nations. The follow-up project will further enhance disaster resilience against water related disasters by restarting and upgrading the seawalls on the north and east coasts in Male’ Island. Additionally, through this project Government of Japan will provide Government of Maldives specialized equipment for effective stormwater drainage in Male’ Island to stabilise the basis of life and economic and social activities.
 
The duration of this Design Phase of the project is within 1 year, which is expected to pave the way for the following Construction Phase mobilising substantial grant amount to start the construction work to upgrade the Male’ seawall to be completed by 2027. This two-phase grand project will be implemented by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in close partnership with the Ministry of Construction and Infrastructure.
