Ambassador of Japan to the Maldives Her Excellency Mrs. Takeuchi Midori with His Excellency Mr. Thoriq Ibrahim, Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy formally handed over 30 newly manufactured trucks to 30 island councils at a ceremony held in Malé Waste Transfer Station on June 12, 2024.

These vehicles are donated in line with the Exchange of Notes signed between the Government of Japan and the Government of Maldives in December 2022 under the Economic and Social Development Programme. The grant in value of Seven hundred million Japanese Yen (¥ 700,000,000), which is approximately USD 6.5 million was committed to complement the efforts of the Government of Maldives to build a sustainable and integrated waste management system in the islands. The substantial assistance comprises of a collection of Waste Glass Crusher, Waste Can and Plastic Compressor, Light Weight Trucks, Wheel Loaders and Compactor Trucks. This project covers about 100 inhabited islands and 3 regional facilities for large-scale waste management.

On Feb 22, the first batch of 48 trucks were dispatched to 48 island councils encouraging the local communities for waste segregation to enforce the waste management regulation.

The Government of Japan hopes that this assistance will complement the efforts of the Government of Maldives to build a sustainable and integrated waste management system across the Maldives.
