Reception to commemorate the 55th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between Japan and Maldives
Malé, December 20, 2022 – The Reception to commemorate the 55th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between Japan and the Maldives welcomed H.E. Mr. Abdulla Shahid, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Maldives as the Guest of Honour with, the attendance of Mr. TAKEI Shunsuke, State Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan.
State Minister TAKEI visited Maldives on December 19 to celebrate the 55th anniversary with the Government and the people of Maldives, and to discuss the future direction of cooperation and development of Japan-Maldives relations.
Since 1960s, beginning with assistance in the fisheries sector, Japan has supported the economic and social development of the Maldives through a total of more than USD $400 million in assistance including the construction of seawall in Malé and a number of schools across the archipelago. Japan's assistance has not been limited to infrastructure construction, but has also contributed to technical assistance and human resource development over a long period of time, including 359 JOCVs, 125 experts dispatched, and 1,235 people accepted for training.
The anniversary year of 2022 has seen more than 30 commemorative events held in the Maldives, including in particular the Japan-Maldives Festival in November, which attracted more than 1,000 families to celebrate the 55th anniversary.
The Embassy of Japan will continue our efforts to develop and strengthen bilateral relations as the most understanding partner of Maldives towards glorious future of the nation.
