While this year has been designated as the Japan-Southwest Asia Exchange Year 2022, it also marked the 55th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Maldives. As a commemoration of this important milestone, the Japan-Maldives Festival was held on November 26, 2022 at the Social Center in Malé, open to the public.
The Honorary Chair of the 55th Anniversary's organising committee Abdul Hameed Zakariyya, the former Ambassador of the Maldives to Japan, gave the opening remarks. The festival was kicked off by a brass band performance by students of Hiriya School, which was developed with Japanese assistance. A Dhivehi speech contest was also held on the outdoor stage. On the indoor stage, a martial arts performance by Kudo Maldives, a tuna shaving demonstration by Yamaki Corporation, a sushi rolls demo&lecture by Ambassador’s Chef Inagaki, and a monologue ”HitoriShibai” by Ito Shoko were held.
In addition, the exhibition booths by JICA, CoraCora Maldives, and Authentic Maldives, as well as the Japanese calendar exhibition, Japanese yukata dressing, and Japanese culture sessions (origami, chopsticks, etc.) were a great success. It was a wonderful night where Maldivians could enjoy Japanese culture and foods with their families and friends. The Embassy of Japan in the Maldives will continue to promote Japanese culture in the future.
