The Government of Japan commits to further strengthen local productivity of agricultural produce in the Maldives through United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Maldives

Malé, October 12, 2021 – The grant agreement was signed by Her Excellency Keiko Yanai, Ambassador of Japan to the Maldives and Mr. Enrico Gaveglia, UNDP Resident Representative in Maldives.
 
Under the terms of the Exchange of Note, the Government of Japan committed a grant of three hundred and two million Japanese Yen (¥ 302,000,000), (approximately USD 2.7 million which is equivalent to Maldivian Rufiyaa 41.7 million) for – The Project for Developing Sustainable Agricultural Economy (PDSAE).
 
The PDSAE builds on the success of the phase 1 of the SEEDS project, which was aimed to promote economic diversification through empowered Micro-, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs), to create a new generation of agri-businesses that are innovative and productive, and to practice environmentally sustainable agriculture. The phase 1 of the SEEDS project was designed to support the efforts to respond to social-economic impact caused by COVID-19 and it targeted young women and men who are actively seeking employment, persons with disabilities without employment opportunities, and women who are not able to do full-time work but seeking to earn an income.
 
The phase 2 of the SEEDS - PDSAE aims to further strengthen local productivity of agricultural produce in the Maldives through three outputs focusing on:
1.  Strengthening assistance to increase local farmer expertise in agriculture
2.  Enhancing agricultural capacities and opportunities to ensure food security
3.  Enhancing support industries and value-added services to augment agro-businesses 

The Government of Japan has been actively contributing to global efforts to overcome COVID-19 impact. Since the outbreak of the pandemic, the Government of Japan has committed grants in the total value of approximately USD 8.5 million to the Maldives, namely:
-  USD 5.6 million to the Government of Maldives to equip and improve the health services at atolls and regional hospitals across the Maldives.
-  USD 1.4 million to UNDP Maldives in support of small and medium enterprises in agri-businesses affected by COVID-19.
-  USD 356,400 to UNICEF Maldives and USD 185,000 for the Maldives Red Crescent to complement the Government’s effort to respond to COVID-19 and,
-  USD 1,032,719 to UNICEF Maldives to assist the Government of Maldives to continue building a sustainable immunization supply chain system.
 
In addition to these grants,
-  USD 47.5 million was extended to the Government of Maldives as 'The COVID-19 Crisis Response Emergency Support Loan’ and,
-  112,000 doses of AstraZeneca (AZ) vaccine manufactured in Japan was donated to the Maldives through the COVAX facility as part of Japan’s “Last One Mile Support”.
