The Government of Japan pledges a well-equipped sea ambulance worth USD 3.6 million to Maldives

Malé, October 4, 2021 – The grant agreement was signed by Her Excellency Keiko Yanai, Ambassador of Japan to the Maldives, and His Excellency Ahmed Khaleel, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs.
Under the terms of the Exchange of Note, the Government of Japan committed a grant of four hundred million Japanese Yen (¥ 400,000,000), (approximately USD 3.6 million which is equivalent to Maldivian Rufiyaa 55.5 million) for further promoting the economic and social development of the Maldives. The grant is intended for the procurement of a sea ambulance that would be used during medical evacuations as well as in humanitarian and disaster relief (HDR) operations.
The special features of this Japanese made vessel include;
- 19-meter-long vessel has a cruising speed of 40.5KT
- Specially designed for maneuverability in rough weather conditions
- Well equipped with life support apparatuses such as oxygen flow meter, aspirator, ECG monitor, automatic CPR etc. and paramedics can administer semi-treatments in the vessel.
In October 2019, the Government of Japan handed over 21 land ambulances in value of USD 1.4 million to the Ministry of Health to be distributed to 21 islands across 15 atolls. These ambulances were donated as part of the grant of 300 million Japanese Yen (equivalent to USD 2.8 million) committed for the Health Sector of the Maldives, in line with the Exchange of Notes signed by the Government of Japan and Government of Maldives in June 2018, under the “The Economic and Social Development Programme’’.
The Government of Japan hopes that this donation will complement the efforts of the Government to strengthen the response of health system in emergencies.
