Japan and U.S. continue collaborating to strengthen paramedical capabilities of the MNDF Coast Guard

Malé, August 5, 2021 – The U.S. Embassy in Sri Lanka in collaboration with the Embassy of Japan in Maldives held a paramedic training for the MNDF Coast Guard in Malé on the 3rd to 5th August 2021. Thirty three officers successfully completed a two-day intensive training led by Captain Xiaotao Xu, Civil Military Support Element Director and SSG Nathan Greene, Civil Military Support Element Medical Advisor from the U.S. Embassy in Sri Lanka. This is the second training and the first one was conducted to sixteen divers from the MNDF Coast Guard Dive & Salvage Unit on 9th and 10th March 2021.
In November 2020, the Government of Japan extended a grant of USD 7.6 million to the Government of Maldives to provide Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) communication equipment to strengthen the operation of the Coast Guard in Search & Rescue and Maritime Security as well as professional dive equipment to support the Coast Guard Divers. In order to complement this assistance, the U.S Embassy in Sri Lanka has conducted the paramedic training to the Coast Guard divers who are the first responders to all maritime accidents.
