The Government of Japan pledges equipment worth USD 7.6 million to strengthen the operational capability of the Maldives National Defence Force Coast Guard
Malé, November 22, 2020 – The grant agreement was signed by Her Excellency Keiko Yanai, Ambassador of Japan to the Maldives, and His Excellency Abdulla Shahid, Minister of Foreign Affairs with a view to further promoting the economic and social development of the Maldives.
Under the terms of the Exchange of Note, the Government of Japan extends to the Government of Maldives, a grant of eight hundred million Japanese Yen (¥ 800,000,000), (approximately USD 7.6 million which is equivalent to Maldivian Rufiyaa 117 million). The grant is intended to strengthen the operational capability of the Maldives National Defence Force Coast Guard in carrying out humanitarian operations.
Equipment to be procured under this grant will include:
- Communication equipment for Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) in Villimale, two regional MRCC centres, and vessels, including Inmarsat, high power HF transmitters, electronic charts, high end IP phones and servers & software applications.
- Search & Rescue professional dive gears and more than 50 related equipment, including recompression chambers, high pressure air compressor, gas storage systems, remotely operated underwater vehicle (ROV), underwater scooters and body recovery tools.
- Additionally, specialized trainings on operating dive equipment and its maintenance will be conducted.
A significant contribution under this grant assistance is the introduction of a recompression chamber not limited to the Coast Guard but to the general public as well for the first time in the country.
