Fascinating books on contemporary Japan, donated to Hiriya School
2018/9/30

On September 10, 2018, H.E. Mr. Kazumi Endo, Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of Maldives, handed over 92 books to Ms. Rinzy Ibrahim Waheed, Principal of Hiriya School, at a book-donation ceremony held today in Hiriya School. The Nippon Foundation (Japan) donated those books to Hiriya School under its ‘Read Japan’ initiative to promote deeper understanding of contemporary Japan.
The Nippon Foundation was established in 1962 as a non-profit philanthropic organization in Japan. The Foundation donated 54,071 volumes to 857 libraries in 115 countries from 2008 to 2012. In 2010, the Foundation made contribution of 100 books respectively to (i) the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture Library of the National Library of Maldives, and (ii) the Library of the Maldives College of Higher Education–the predecessor of the present ‘Maldives National University’.
H.E. Mr. Kazumi Endo conveyed his sincere hope that this donation from Japan will give students and teachers a big boost in gaining better knowledge on contemporary Japan and its politics, economy, society, history and culture.
It is pertinent to mention that, between 1979 and 1989, under Japan’s grant assistance, elementary schools were built in 15 local islands. Later, four primary schools and secondary schools (i.e. Kalaafaanu School, Thaajudheen School, Giyasuddin School and Hiriya School) were also built under Japan’s grants assistance.
Hiriya School was built in 2008 and, under Japan’s grant assistance, solar panels were installed in 2014 to make it eco-friendly.
The ceremony was attended by Dr. Abdulla Nazeer, Minister of State for Education, Mr. Hiroshi Saito, Resident Representative of JICA Maldives Office, Representatives from the Ministry of Education, Representative from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Hiriya School management, lead teachers and students.
